8U Practice/Game Curriculum

Week 1

Practice 1 - Ball Control
Practice 2 - Attacking

Week  3

Practice 5 - Passing/Game #1
5 min - Soccer Ball Smash
10 min - Pass the ball 3 yds to a teammate (if you have 9 players add an extra player to one of the pairs and have them follow their pass. If you have 10 add an extra player to two pairs on the same side and have them follow their pass. This will also add a bit more awareness practice)
10 min - Pass the ball 3 yards to a team mate - add "no entry" zones based on the number of cones you have. Zones can also be triangles.

Practice 6 - Attacking/Game #2
10 min - You and Me
10 min - 1v1 Attacking and Defending
5 min - 2v2 Attacking and Defending (same as 1v1 above but 2v2)


Week 4 

Practice 7 - Defending/Game #3
5 min - Where The Defenders Should Be?
10 min - Get Back!
10 min - Pass and Press
Practice 8 - Restarts/Game #4
5 min – For warmup setup a 10x10 grid. Space all the players evenly around the grid. If the team has 10 players you will have
3 on
two sides and 2 on the other two sides. On your call, have all the players dribble back and forth across the box at good pace. The players should try to
avoid other players by practicing different moves, dribbling into space, adjusting their speed, and keeping their head up. Make sure they
are practicing turns has the get to each side. The drill should be done a high pace. The players should count how many times they make
it back to the side they started at.
 Go for 1-minute rest for 30 seconds. The focus is dribbling technique, awareness, and conditioning.

Week 5

Practice 9 - Ball Control/Game #5 - download/print

10 min – Dribbling Warmup – see pdf. Can be setup in a 15x15 square also.

5 min – 1v1 continuous – have 2 setups of 10x10

5 min – 1v1 continuous with no tackle - have 2 setups of 10x10

5 min – 2v1 to goal – not on pdf – have 3 lines. One line starting on one goal post. Other two lines starting near mid field. Balls start from the line near the goal post and is played out to one of the two other lines. Both attack players located near the mid field line attack the goal against the defender who passed the ball out in a 2v1. Use a goalie.

5 min – Dynamic Warmup – High Knees, Heel Kick Ups, Carioca, Soldier Kicks, Bounding, Power Skips, Open The Gate, Close The Gate,
Backward run, Arm Windmills (forward/backward), jog to sprint runs
10 min – Fun, Competitive Keep Away Game – see pdf – You may need to make minor adjustments in order to include all players. This may
include a number of players participating and/or grid size
10 min – 5v2 Keep Away – Drill #1 – see pdf – You may need to make minor adjustments in order to include all players. This may include

Week 6

Practice 11 - Game #7 - no pdf
5 min – Dynamic Warmup – High Knees, Heel Kick Ups, Carioca, Soldier Kicks, Bounding, Power Skips, Open The Gate, Close The Gate,
Backward run, Arm Windmills (forward/backward), jog to sprint runs
10 min - 2v2 Continuous - Have 2 lines of attackers near the mid line about 10 yds apart. Balls in one line. Start with 2 defenders in front of a goalie. Play begins with the first two attackers (one from each line) attacking the defenders trying to score a goal. Once a shot has been taken the next pair of attackers goes. The first two attackers turn and play defense. After playing defense the players rotate to the back of the attack lines. Make sure the players are focused and ready to go as soon as the shot is taken so that it keeps play moving quickly.
10 min - 3v2 min 4 passes before a shot - start with 3 lines of attackers near the mid line and two lines of defenders on either side of the goal. Balls start in one of the defensive lines. Play starts by the defender passing the ball out to one of the attackers. The three attackers go to goal against the pair of defenders. A shot can not be taken until 4 passes have been made without the defensive stealing the ball. Once a shot has been taken or the defense wins the ball the next group begins.

Practice 12 - Game #8 - no pdf
5 mins – Dynamic Warmup – High Knees, Heel Kick Ups, Carioca, Soldier Kicks, Bounding, Power Skips, Open The Gate, Close The Gate,
Backward run, Arm Windmills (forward/backward), jog to sprint runs
15 mins - Basic Rondo - Circle your team and place 2 defenders in the circle. The players in the circle pass the ball around trying to keep it away from the defenders. Start with no more than 3 touches per player. Then try 2 touch and if you have time try 1 touch.
5 mins - 2 v 1 with a goalie - Start with 2 lines of attackers around the midline. Have one line of defenders start to one side of the goal behind the touchline with balls. Use a goalie. To start have the defenders pass the ball out to one of the attackers. The attackers try to beat the defender and shoot on goal.


Week 7

Practice 13 - Game #9  - no pdf

5 min - The Shadow - Skill: Dribbling - Number Of Players Required: Full U-8 Team - Equipment: 1 soccer ball per player and 4 or more cones to mark the grid. - Grid Requirement: A 30 X 30 yard grid
Organization: Using cones layout a 30 X 30 yard grid. Divide the team into pairs. All players are within the grid, with one ball per player.
How The Game Is Played: Players begin to move in any direction throughout the grid one partner leading and the other closely following. The trailing player tries to imitate the dribbling movements of the lead player. Coach will blow his or her whistle after about 20 to 30 seconds, the leader then becomes the follower.
10 min - 1v1 to goal - divide the team in to two groups. Place one group with balls next to one of the goal posts (defenders). Place the other group near the mid-line (attackers). Have the first player in the defender's line pass the ball out to the first player in the attackers line. The attacker trys to score a goal 1v1 against the defender. Make sure you coach both the offense and defensive techniques while do this drill.
